Tues 7 Wednes 8 Thurs.9. Fri 10 helping James Wilcox make hay Sat 11.
Went to the city with T. S. Smith Sun. 12 Preching by Bro. H.C. Kimball
upon our loveing god + not Our Brethern to. Mon 13. Mon 13. Tues 14.
Wednes 15 helping J.D. Wilcox make hay. Thurs. 16 helped J.W. harvest.
Friday 17 J.W. helped me Mow. Sat 18 helped J.W. harvest. Sun 19 at
meeting. Mon 20 Tues 21 Wednes 22 Thurs 23 J.W. helped me harvest my
Wheat. Fri 24 cut wheat in the forenoon to T. Groves at night to a party.
Sat 25 helped J.D. Harvest. Sun 26 at meeting. Bro Orson Hyde gave us
a good discourse upon our situation as a people. Mon 27 mowing and cradleing.
Tues 28 Wednes 29 Thurs 30 J.W. helped me Make hay. Fri 31 Went in Weber
kanion after Berries.
AUGUST, 1857
Satur. 1 of August, 1857. Sun 2 in the kanion. Mon 3 Came home got IV
Bushels of Berries. Tues 4 hauled Sand + Clay. Wednes 5 Mowed hay for
Father. Thurs 6 Went to fast meeting. Went to the City in the Evening
with hay. Fri 7 Came home. H. Miller came home from his mission. Sat
8 hauled Sand + Oats, my Wife was sick. Sun 9 at meeting. Mon 10 got
my Oxen shod my wife getting better. Tues 11 work at my house, we had
a heavy shower of rain + hail. Wednes 12 Fixing to go in the kanion.
Thurs 13 got a load of bark. Fri 14 mowing grafs.
H. Judd came + told me to leave my work + go with 10 men up Weber kanion
To see the indians + talk with them + keep on the watch that our enemies
come not on us unawares. Left my work to fix to start. Sat 15 got ready
to start received our instructions from Col. P.C. Merrel Started about
1 o'clock, camped in Weber kanion. Sun 16 drove 30 miles + camped. Mon
17 traveled to Lost creek + camped. Tues 18 Wednes 19 Thurs 20 Fri 21
Sat 22. We kept our guard on Emigration road explored the mountains
+ kanions talked with some indians who appeared very friendly we enjoyed
our selves very well + done as we were counseled to do. relief guard
come this Evening. Sun 23 Started for home I went down Canyon creek.
Camped in Weber valley. Mon 24 arrived home all well. Tues 25 fixing
tools to work at my house. Wednes 26 working at my house. Thurs 27 went
to the city with hay. Fri 28 shingleing my house, Sat 29 working at
my house. Sun 30 at meeting in forenoon making a genealogy in the afternoon.
Mon 31 loaded hay and went to the city in the evening.
SEPTEMBER, 1857
Tues 1 of Sept. 1857 came home. Wednes 2 hauled some clay + went mill.
Thurs 3 went to fast meeting. Fri 4 went in the kanion + got a load
of shingles. Sat 5 Plastered my house. Lucy went to the city. Sun 6
At meeting. Mon 7 got a Load of Wood. Tues 8 J.D. Wilcox + me making
a Wagon Box. Wednes 9 got a Load of Wood. Thurs 10 ground my knife +
worked at my box. Fri 11 got a Load of Wood. Sat 12 went to the city.
Sun 13 at meeting in the city. Pres. B. Young declared our independence.
He said if we would live our religion, God would fight our battles,
Assistant Quartermaster of the U.S. Army. On their way to the valleys
to destroy the Mormons was at meeting. Mon 14 got a load of wood. Tues
15 got a load of salt. Wednes 16 fixing my shead. Thurs 17 got a load
of Wood. Fri 18 went with J.D. Wilcox + got 2 shingels logs. Sat 19
settled my tithing + taxes + done some other Business (?). Sun 20 at
meeting. Mon 21 got a Load of Wood. Tues 22 Fixing my Wagon in the Fore
Noon Thrashing in the after Noon. Wednes 23 Thrashing Wheat. Thurs 24
got a load of Wood. Fri 25 at work about the house. There was a call
made for men to go on the road East. Some 25 went.
Sat 26 was set apart for a mifsion on Salmon river among the Lamanites
by Amasco Lyman, one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ James D.
Willcox moved to my house. Sun 27 at work. Mon 28 fixing about my house
went to the city with Pres. T.S. Smith in the Evening. Tues 29 came
home. Wednes 30 fixing to start to Salmon river.
OCTOBER, 1857
Thur 1 of Oct, 1857 started from home on my mifsion in good spirits.
Left my Little Daughter Sick. Traveled to the sand ridge camped for
the night. Fri 2 went to the Bro. Foxes (?) mill got my wheat ground
in the night. Sat 3 went to 5 mile creek the company lost some cattle
the night before found them camped there for the night there was some
3 hundred men in arms at Ogden City ready to march at a moments Warning.
Sun 4 traveled to Box Elder 15 miles put a Sand Board on Our Wagon.
Mon 5 went to Bear 18 miles. Tues 6 crofsed Bear River, went to a spring
in the Malad valley. 12 miles. Pres. T.S. Smith, M.D. Harmon, P. Margretts
arrived. Wednes 7 pafsed Barnerd Fort, went 12 miles camp. Thurs 8 the
Company was called together S.P. Tayler Was appointed Capt. Bro. More
Clerk. M.D. Hammond Serg. Of Sword. J.J. Clark and P. Margretts C. Dalton,
Champlains Traveled 12 miles. Fri 9 went to the head of Malad creek
15 miles. Sat 10 crofsed the divide to Bannack Creek 12 miles. Sun 11
rained in the fore Noon. Went 10 miles I was on Guard. Mon 12 traveled
18 miles camped on the Portnieff (?). Tues 13 crofsed the Portnieff
past Fort Hall. Took some little gron (?) Camped by Fort Loren 10 miles.
Fort Loren was set on fire by some body not known. Wednes 14 went to
hunt gron (?) found Some. Thurs 15 went to the crofsing of Snake river
met Wm. Magaray (?) + Bro. Dunn from Fort Limhi Pafsed Andrew Cunningham
+ company on Black Foot Creek. Cutting hay Building a fort Dis. 14 miles.
Fri 16 crofsed Snake River Charles Dalton broke a wagon tire went 12
miles I stood guard. Sat 17 went 17 miles a northwind commenced blowing
about noon brought a snow storm with it the coldest night we had. Sun
18 cold wind blowing clear sky camped on Market Lake 17 miles Sil Collet,
A. Zondel from Fort Limhi came to us on a exprefs stating that they
was sent to see if any body was coming out here. Mon 19 T.S. Smith,
M.D. Hammond + Wm. Marler. Started ahead to Salmon river we traveled
16 miles to Medison Lodge over rock + sand. Tues 20 traveled 12 miles
over rock + sand pafsed Mudy Lake. Camped without water. Wednes 21 started
about 3 o'clock in the morning drove 18 miles to Spring Creek camped
for the night. Thurs 22 traveled 15 miles I stood guard. Fri 23 drove
to Chicken Creek. Sat 24 I went a hunting the company camped on the
head waters of Salmon Creek. Sun 25 traveled 16 miles down the river
after we had camped Ebenezer my Brother + 2 other boys from the fort
came to us. I was happy + thankfull to my Heavenly Father for the Priviledge
of meeting my Brother after the absence of 1 year enjoying health +
strength. Mon 26 traveled 16 miles. Camped 6 miles from Fort Limhi.
Tues 27 arrived at Fort Limhi at about 11 o'clock in good health + spirits
after a fine + Prosperous Journey. Found the Boys Feeling First rate
Wednes 28. Went 2 ½ miles Down the river to where the other For
was Located in the fore Noon. Found the Country Cooking full as well
as I expected. Wrote a letter to my Wife in the after noon. The Company
Started for home. Thurs. 29. My Bro Evenezer Started home in good Spirits
I Sent a letter by him Fri 30. Hiched up my team with Some Others +
drove to the Lower Fort. Sat. 31. Worked on M.D. Hammonds house.
NOVEMBER, 1857
Sun. 1 of Nov. 1857 Went to the upper Fort to meeting Bro Tayler + more
Preached. Mon. 2. Went with M Hammond after Punching Stuff. Tues. 3.
Wednes. 4. Worked on Miltons house. Thurs. 5 Fast day Went to the upper
Fort to meeting had a good meeting Ezra Barnard + Bro Perkins Arived
from the valley of Salt Lake Sri. 6. Storming Sat. 7. Worked on house
A. Quigley, F. Welch, J. McBride Arrived at Fort Limhi Sun. 8. Went
to the upper Fort to meeting. I received a letter from my wife She was
well when She wrote But had to work very hard Lucy Marin had got well.
I was very glad to hear from them + that the Lord Blefsed them with
health + Strength. She sent me some preserves + dried Squash. She wrote
that Irma (?) Boy was Dead + there was a great deal of sicknefs among
the Children + People in the valley. Mon. 9. Snowing in the morning
mending all day Tues. 10 hewing Punchings. Wednes. 11. Hauled Some timber
for a dore. Thurs. 12. Went with Milton + got Some Pine Timber Fri.
13. Hauled Some Wood. Sat. 14. Worked about the house. Sun. 15. At meeting
to Wm. Taylers house. Mon. 16. Tues. 17 hauling Wood Wednes. 18. Washing
+ making aA Box to Put my Clothes in Thurs. 19. Finished my Box + Worked
on the Cow yard. At meeting in the Evening. Fri. 20. Worked on cow yard
Sat. 21. Helped cut a load of Birch Wood for Bro. Margretts to make
coal of. Sun. 22. At meeting. T.S. Smith + Bro. Margretts Came was with
us + gave us Some good Counsel + instructions at meeting in the evening
Mon. 23. Went + got a Stone to make a grindstone of Tues. 24. Wednes.
25. Thurs. 26. James T. Miller + myself hauled a Set of house logs Fri.
27. Went down the river with J. Miller + J.D. Willcox + got some of
yoke timber + timber to cover a house Sat. 28. Wrote a leter Letter
to My Wife + Father + mother took the Letters to the upper Fort Pres.
T.S. Smith + Lewis Shertleff took the mail for Salt Lake Started about
2 o'clock. P.m. Sun. 29. At meeting as usual Mon. 30 Went to the other
Fort to Thrash Wheat. Bro Green P. Tayler + Derfey Came + Surveyed Our
Farmes for us
DECEMBER, 1857
Tues. 1 of Dec. 1857 Wednes. 2. Thrashing. Wheat. Thurs. 3. At fast
meeting had a good time we drawed for our lots. M. D. Hammond. Wm Tayler
Was appointed Capt. Of ten in the military F. Welch + myself Serg. For
the ten Fri. 4. Washing. Mending + Cleaning my gun Sat. 5. Mending +
making a Bullet Pouch. Sun. 6. At meeting as usual Mon. 7. Not doing
much Tues. 8 hunting Poles. Wednes. 9 Went to the Upper Fort with A
Wilcox + Barnes Miller to thrash Wheat for Richard Margretts Thurs.
10 Thrashing Wheat Fri 11 the
Same T.S. Smith + Lewis Shertlieff Returned they did Not go Only to
Smoke River the Snow was about a Foot Deep when they started Back +
it looked Deeper Father on. They thought they would not be able to come
back this Winter So they thought they would come when they could Sat.
12 Thrashing wheat Sun. 13 at meeting Pres T. S. Smith gave us Some
good instructions Mon. 14. Tues. 15. Thrashing Wheat + Finished. Wednes.
16. Snowed about one inch Came home at Night helped Margretts Some through
the Day to Clean Wheat Thurs. 17. Washing + put up Some Shelves Fri.
18 Spliting Some Cooper Stuff Sat. 19. Got Some Cap Timber for Heweing
Sun. 20. At meeting Mon 21. Split Covering for a house. The weather
is very good Snow not an inch Deep as fine Wether as I ever saw for
winter weather Tues. 22. Clearing land of Brush. George Mcbride + John
Barnard Arived with the mail From Salt L. Valley in good health + Spirits
+ had a Prosperous Journey. Received A Letter From my Wife Also one
from Ebenezer. Wednes. 23 Making a lye leach George Mcbride was here
we had a good time Thurs. 24. Went to the Fort helped Fan Wheat in Milton
Place Fri 25. Came home Drove Ebenezer Cow Down here Wm. J. Smith S.
Gene Wm. Perry Wives got us a good Christmas. Super Sat 26 helped to
gather Cattle to take to the herd. 40 or 50. Neperonies Indians (?)
Came to the Upper Fort in Pursuit of their Chief + Some horses that
Were Stolen by the Bannocks they took Poned (?) a mountaineer prisiner
they Found their Chief at the upper Fort Which Pasafied them very much
they were very Frendly towards us their Chief had ben Living with Pres
T.S. Smith About 8 days Before the Nepersias came while his partner
Elleson with mother Indian was after the horses Sun. 27. Went to the
upper Fort was at meeting Some of the Persias + Shoshonies Chiefs was
present We had a good meeting Talked to the chiefs Considerable concerning
Fighting stealing xc. Elexer returned with ten horses. The Shoshonies
were in a considerble of a Fright thinking they Would have to Fight.
Mon. 28. Cutting Poles. No Fight yet it snowed about one half inch.
Tues. 29 the Nepersias Started home Yesterday. Stole Some 50 or 60 head
of horses from the Shoshonies Last Night it Snowed about 2 inches. The
indians about us do not feel just right towards us because we Fed the
Nepersias when they here her. Cutting Poles Wednes. 30. Fased my mittens
Pres. T.S. Smith gave these Indians a Dinner to Satisfy them Thurs.
31 Cuting. Poles. The Weather Fine + Pleasant.
